Steps to Membership

There are three options for completing an online application for Membership.

- Click on Application for Membership to complete your application online;

- Scan the QR code below with your cell phone to fill out your Application for Membership online; or

- Download a PDF of the Application for Membership to complete by using Adobe or by hand. You may bring your application to KVFD Station 5 at Connecticut Avenue & Plyers Mill Road, or mail it to:

KVFD Human Resources Division
P.O. Box 222
Kensington, MD 20895

After your application has been reviewed and your references verified, you will be contacted by phone or mail to schedule an interview.

Next, if selected to continue your candidate position with the department, you will schedule a physical examination with the Montgomery County Medical Office. The physical is modeled after the NFPA 1001 (National Fire Protection Administration Medical Standard 1001) and will be performed at no cost to you.

In addition, all applicants will be required to submit an official criminal background check. This check is a policy of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Commission. Having a criminal record does not necessarily disqualify an otherwise qualified applicant from joining. However, failing to reveal that information on the official application will immediately terminate the application process. During this time you will be enrolled and complete the Volunteer Basic Orientation Course (VBOC). This course will prepare you for the department and allow you an insight in to the fire service as a whole. This is a requirement of all candidates prior to being brought to the department to be voted into probationary membership.

After all of the above steps have been completed (generally about 90-120 days), you will be called in for a final interview. Upon successful completion of the application process, you will be presented for membership at the monthly company meeting.

Are you up for the challenge, the excitement, and the satisfaction of serving your community? The commitment of time is great, but so are the rewards. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss the operations of our department in greater detail.

Please contact recruiter@kvfd.org if you have further questions or require more information.

As we gear up for the 2nd annual Chili Cookoff, a big thanks to two great Kensington businesses for sponsoring the event, Car Wash Coffee and Strosniders Hardware!

Please support them as they support us, AND, yes, we do still have additional sponsorship opportunities available for the Chili Cookoff - PM us for details!
