The Montgomery County First Aid Unit
Explorer Post 521

(Sponsored by the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.)

The Montgomery County First Aid Unit, Explorer Post 521, is a volunteer service organization that provides first aid and emergency medical services at community events in Montgomery County and the Washington Metropolitan area.  In addition, we provide training in emergency medical care and leadership development for our volunteers.

What is the First Aid Unit?

The Montgomery County First Aid Unit, Explorer Post 521, is a volunteer service organization that provides first aid station services at events throughout Montgomery County and the surrounding areas.  The First Aid Unit will provide a crew consisting of three to six trained volunteer personnel for the times and location you request.

Crew members are trained, as a minimum, in American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR, and in first aid.  At least one crew member will be trained in American Red Cross Emergency Response or higher.  Treatment will be limited to these levels of training.  Some First Aid Unit personnel are certified as EMT’s or higher.

All transportation of the sick and/or injured must be made by ambulance, friends, or family members. The Montgomery County First Aid Unit does not provide ambulance service or transportation.

How does your organization request service from the First Aid Unit?

All requests for coverage must be submitted in writing (mail, fax, or e-mail) at least six weeks prior to the date for which coverage is requested.  Each request should include the dates, times, location, estimated attendance and type of activity.  Your request must also include the name and telephone number(s) of the contact individual.  Acceptance of a request for service will be acknowledged in writing by the administration of the First Aid Unit.
Requests should be sent to:

Attn: First Aid Unit Chairman
The Montgomery County First Aid Unit
Explorer Post 521
PO Box 222
Kensington, MD 20895
e-mail: FAU@KVFD.org
Fax: 301-929-8008
Phone: 301-929-8004

(Please note: the phone is for voice mail only; however, if you need to contact someone from the First Aid Unit immediately, please call this number as it pages a supervisor.)

Requests for service are accepted based on First Aid Unit volunteer crew availability. Normally, requests are accepted on a first come, first served basis.  However, if requests for the same date of service are received on the same day, the First Aid Unit reserves the right to accept the request for service based on the estimated size of the event (attendance).

A suitable location must be provided for each first aid station. The area chosen should be centrally located, easily accessible and include the following provisions: water and ice supply, table and chairs, covered shelter, restroom facilities, and reserved parking place.  The First Aid Unit can operate in a tent – if we need to provide our own tent, please notify us of this in advance.

How much does it cost?

The first aid station is provided by The Montgomery County First Aid Unit, Explorer Post 521 and is manned by volunteers. There is no charge to the sponsoring organization.

Donations are especially appreciated, as the First Aid Unit does not receive an annual budget. The First Aid Unit does not require nor expect donations, but if your organization wishes to donate, please make checks payable to: "Kensington VFD for Explorer Post 521" All donations are tax deductible.  A tax ID number is available on request. First aid supplies are a welcome donation, but please contact us before donating supplies to determine what is needed.

When events include normal mealtimes, it is requested that meals be provided for the crew by the sponsoring organization.
